From the Foundations up

Quality art education starts with the FOUNDATIONS. Visual problem-solving skills like drawing, perspective, lighting, how to depict form, understanding of value and color theory, and design are imperative to one’s understanding of art making. Whether it be a drawing, painting, animation film, a logo/brand, or website... the foundations are where it all starts and are something that no artist can ever study enough.

In-person Workshop

Let's Paint San Diego

Landscape & Plein Air Painting Workshop Oct 14 - 17

Explore and paint the beauty of San Diego in this immersive 4-day painting workshop. From dramatic coastal vistas to sunlit hillsides and atmospheric landscapes, San Diego offers endless inspiration for the landscape painter.

We will begin in the studio, where Rose will share essential principles and practical strategies for successful plein air painting. Through demonstrations, discussions, and painting exercises, you'll learn how to simplify complex scenes, strengthen your compositions, and confidently approach painting outdoors.

After building a solid foundation in the studio, we will venture into the field to paint on location, following in the footsteps of the California Impressionists. Working directly from nature, you'll learn to capture the ever-changing effects of light, atmosphere, and color while developing your own personal response to the landscape.

This workshop is designed for painters seeking to strengthen their plein air skills and create more expressive, confident landscape paintings. With enrollment limited to just 12 students, Rose will be able to provide individualized instruction, demonstrations, and one-on-one guidance throughout the workshop.

What You'll Learn

  • How to simplify and organize the landscape into strong, compelling designs

  • Strategies for quickly assessing light, values, and color relationships outdoors

  • How to capture atmosphere, depth, and the unique character of a place

  • The importance of notan, value patterns, and composition in landscape painting

  • Color mixing techniques for creating luminous, harmonious paintings

  • Brushwork and paint handling approaches that add energy and expression

  • How to edit nature and focus on what matters most in a scene

  • Methods for creating field studies that can later be developed into larger studio works

  • Ways to strengthen your personal artistic voice while painting from observation

Daily demonstrations, group critiques, and individual instruction will help you gain confidence and deepen your understanding of landscape painting in a supportive and inspiring environment.

I am happy to announce that I have been invited as a fellow artist for Ilan_Lael. The Ilan-Lael Foundation was founded in 1982 by James and Anne Hubbell.

The Foundation pursues the Hubbell legacy by maintaining Ilan-Lael, the place, as a center for
arts, education, and culture, and carrying forward James Hubbell’s visionary work on projects
like Pacific Rim Park, art and nature education programs, exhibitions, and collaborations with
community partners here and abroad.

I will be teaching here and producing a body of work that will be on exhibit at the Atheneum, La Jolla in 2027.

This workshop is suitable for artists working in any medium and provides a wonderful foundation for my upcoming plein air landscape workshop later this year.

As a beginning art student, this workshop challenged me, but Rose is an amazing and inspirational teacher with a positive and upbeat style that encouraged me to explore my limits. Her mastery of the foundations of painting, along with some valuable techniques that help in the planning stages, have given me so many tools to help elevate my painting skills. This workshop was an exceptional opportunity to travel to an incredible place, improve my skills as an artist, and hang out with an instructor who is just one of those people you enjoy being around!

I started taking classes with Rose when I was 13, and they changed my life. Rose has been an absolute inspiration to me. Not only has she played a pivotal role on the development of my skills as an artist, but she has continued to be a source of support throughout college at the Rhode Island School of Design. I continue to look back on her advice as my steady “rock.” Rose’s lively spirit and passion for art is infectious, and her classes were not only highly educational, but also a source of therapy; I always left her classes with a glow and a smile. Her individual attention has proved invaluable in helping me to be the artist I am today.” -Ruth Holloday, RISD graduate and MFA graducate from CSULB. Professor of Art.

Share success stories or positive feedback to show how awesome, your work really is.

“Rose Irelan is a consummate and gifted teacher. Although I studied drawing and painting at a well known atelier for seven years, I struggled to get a clear over arching foundation in painting. Rose’s clear, coherent and sequenced curriculum perfectly addressed my needs. In just two classes I began to see a marked improvement in my painting, composition and confidence and plan to continue studying with her. Rose focuses on specific processes that work synergistically to move her students not just forward, but in quantum leaps. I now understand how to identify value and create color harmony. Thanks to Rose I follow sequenced steps to create composition and map out values before I begin to paint. She gives her students specific tools and provides focused exercises to increase our awareness of how the processes work together. Her results are phenomenal thanks to her vision and generosity as a teacher.

You are awesome and so passionate about sharing your knowledge. I felt your energy tonight! It was a great refresher from attending all your wonderful classes.

Today I learned that I need to work more with the complementary colors. I use blue and orange together quite often(my go to)but I need to use violet/yellow and red/green more often. I’m missing out on a bunch of colors!

“I wanted to let you know that you deserve much credit for our daughter’s acceptances to three very prestigious colleges, including Rhode Island School of Design and UCLA. Ruth suspects it’s due to portfolios. Our daughter knows that her portfolio could not have been created without your wonderful instruction!!!  We are very grateful that she has had the opportunity to study with you.  RoseArts Atelier is where over the past 5 years she has learned almost all of her technique!!
