I’m mentoring a small group of artists with Massrius. Mastrius is an online community dedicated to fostering community and mentorship amongst artists of all skill levels.

As a Master Mentor, I’ll work closely with each of you to identify and strengthen your unique artistic voice—focusing on your personal areas of interest and talent, while also helping you recognize where you need support to grow. My goal is to help you move forward with confidence, clarity, and renewed excitement in your painting practice.

Drawing on my 20 years of teaching experience, I’ll share relevant, actionable lessons that are rooted in solid fundamentals and tailored to your skill level and goals. You’ll be able to apply what you learn immediately and see measurable improvement in your work.

We’ll dive into core concepts that every painter needs to master, including:

• Value – understanding how light and dark create form, and when and how to simplify values for a clearer visual "read"

• Color – applying color theory to create luminous, harmonious color relationships

• Mixing & Palette Organization – mixing with intention, organizing your palette for efficiency and accuracy, and avoiding “mud and chaos”

• Drawing – improving draftsmanship, accuracy, and perspective while building your confidence

• Composition – learning how to design powerful, engaging paintings and quickly determine which compositions are worth pursuing

• Painting Procedure & Technique – teaching and demonstrating techniques for paint application, color mixing, and brushwork

• Studio Set-Up – sharing how to organize your studio, streamline your plein air gear, and develop systems and workflows that support consistent practice

• Studies – paint-alongs and demos to help you develop alla prima (direct painting) skills so you can paint efficiently and effectively

I’ll also offer in-depth instruction on color mixing, pigment selection, and how to get the most out of oil paint. If there’s interest, I can also teach these same principles using gouache—a beautiful and versatile medium ideal for both studies and finished work.

We’ll spend time discussing how to select meaningful subjects, compose them effectively, and stay inspired—so your work becomes a true reflection of what excites and moves you.

This group will be a place to stretch, explore, ask questions, and receive honest, supportive feedback as you grow both your skills and your creative voice.
